Who Is In Charge?

“The issue of authority is an important subject. This is especially true when it comes to spiritual matters.” (John P. Lathrop)

“You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron” (Psalm 77:20).

The verse that you just read closes out Psalm 77. The text was written by Asaph. What he wrote concerns events that took place in earlier biblical history. More specifically, it refers to events that can be found in the book of Exodus. The word “You” in the verse refers to God. Leading His people “like a flock” is another way of saying He led the people like a shepherd. References to the Lord as a shepherd can be found in a number of places in Scripture (Ps. 23:1; 80:1; Isa. 40:10–11; John 10:11: 1 Pet 5:4).

What I would like you to focus on in Psalm 77:20 is how the Lord led His people. He did it through Moses and Aaron; stated differently, He did it through human beings. As the Lord spoke through human beings, the prophets, He has also led His people through human instruments. In this text Asaph mentions Moses and Aaron. They were both Jews, in fact, brothers (Exod. 4:14). The Lord had called Moses but then allowed him to have Aaron work with him when Moses expressed concern about what he perceived to be a personal inadequacy, his speech (Exod. 4:10– 16).

Not every leader we read about in the Bible was good, this is true even with reference to leaders of God’s people. For example, in the Old Testament Eli and his sons were not models of good spiritual leadership (1 Sam.2:12–17, 22–25; 3:13). And the Lord doesn’t speak very well of the “shepherds of Israel” that He mentions in Ezekiel 34:2 and following. He also takes issue with the priests mentioned in the book of Malachi (Mal. 1:6–14; 2:1-9).

In the New Testament some of the Pharisees clearly missed the mark (Matt. 23). The “super-apostles” (2 Cor. 11:5 NIV) that Paul wrote about also were not good leaders. And Diotrephes, who seems to have had a position of some authority in a church, was not behaving appropriately (3 John 9–10). These individuals had some serious flaws. But even leaders that we would call “good” were not perfect. Moses and Aaron certainly weren’t. Aaron made an idol and then tried to avoid responsibility for it (Exod. 32:1–6, 24) and Moses disobeyed God (Num. 20:9–12). And yet God used them, He used them to lead the nation of Israel.

God does work through the ministries of human leaders (Gal. 2:8). This is an important truth that Christians need to remember, because sometimes we forget it. There were people in the Bible who forgot this. We read on more than one occasion of people who were not respecting their spiritual leaders. Paul instructed the Christians in Thessalonica to respect their leaders (1 Thess. 5:12-13). The writer of the book of Hebrews gave similar advice to readers of his letter (Heb. 13:17).

Now, this does not mean that we blindly follow a leader just because they have a religious title or hold a position of authority in the church. Not at all. Our trust in them needs to be based on their character (1 Tim. 3:2–7; Titus 1:6–9). We need to see good fruit in their lives (Matt. 7:15-20; Luke 6:43-45). They need to demonstrate to those they lead that they are spiritual and are trustworthy. If they have these qualities they are worthy of being followed. And in fact, God may be using them to lead us as His people.

Sometimes when people have a good pastor or spiritual leader and speak or act inappropriately toward him or her they are actually rebelling against God. This is true because they are not following the person or persons that God has given to lead them. We see evidence of this happening in the New Testament. In addition to the examples cited above some in the church in Corinth were rebelling against the authority of the apostle Paul, this put them not only at odds with Paul but also with God because they were not following the truth that God was conveying to them through Paul.

God still works in the way that Asaph wrote about in Psalm 77. He works through the leaders that He has raised up. As we live our Christian lives it is important for us to recognize the leaders that God has given to us. These are those that He will use to lead us as His people. In view of this it is important that we respect them and heed their counsel, because God is granting us His guidance through them. They will lead us in the way that God wants us to go. And all of us should want to be united and found to be in the will of God and doing what He wishes us to do.

SIAPA YANG BERTANGGUNGJAWAB?

“Masalah otoritas adalah hal penting. Ini dibenarkan jika menyangkut masalah rohani.” (John P.Lathrop)

Tuhan bekerja melalui pelayanan para pemimpin manusia (Gal. 2: 8).
